Coupons encourage your customers to write and share product reviews and become repeat shoppers at your store. This is a great way to help you drive more traffic to your store.
In this article, you'll learn how to add coupons to your review request emails.
How it works
You can give your customers a coupon as an incentive for writing or sharing a product review, or you can give them a coupon with added value for both writing and sharing written reviews on their social media channels. You can edit your review request emails to let your customers know about these coupon offers.
Customers that earn coupons receive the coupons right away via email. They’ll be able to redeem the coupon at your store.
You can check the statistics on the usage of your coupons and see how much money the coupons feature brings you each month on the Yotpo dashboard.
Please note:
Due to Google seller rating requirements, you can offer coupons to your customers as an incentive only for submitting product reviews, and not for site reviews.
Coupon types
There are two types of coupons - static and dynamic.
- Static coupons - The same coupon code is used for every customer
- Dynamic coupons - Each customer receives a unique coupon code
Please note:
- Please check the usage setting of your coupon codes before activating the feature in Yotpo. Keep in mind that customers may share coupon codes or add them to a browser extension.
- Coupons are automatically displayed in the Shopify checkout coupon field whilst the extension checks for active coupons.
- Yotpo does not generate coupon codes but rather delivers the established coupon code. To generate the codes please use a coupon system on your platform. We do not support sites that don't have coupon features already set up.
- Customers will receive 1 coupon for each review they submit.
Configuring coupons
Step 1: Enable coupons
Before you start using coupons, you must first install Yotpo's Conversion Tracking Code in your shop.
- Log in to your Yotpo Reviews & Ratings admin.
- Click Collect Reviews.
- Click Coupons.
- Click Activate.
- Follow the steps to add the conversion tracking code to your store. Learn more in Conversion Tracking.
- Once the Conversion Tracking Code has been implemented, set the Enable switch to On. The switch turns green and a checkmark appears.
Step 2: Select coupon type
Choose the type of coupons you want to award from the dropdowns below. You can use the preview to see your changes while you’re setting up the coupon.
Setting Up Coupons for Writing a Review
- Select the Writing a review checkbox.
- Enter the discount you want to offer in the Writing a review only field.
Yotpo adds text to the templates of the Automatic Review Request and/or the Manual Review Request emails after you save the changes. This text informs customers that they can earn a coupon for writing and/or sharing their reviews.
Setting Up Coupons For Sharing a Review
- Select the Sharing a review checkbox.
- Enter the discount you want to offer in the Sharing a review only field.
Yotpo adds text to the templates of the emails that you chose after you save the changes. This text informs customers that they can earn a coupon for writing and/or sharing their reviews.
Setting Up Coupons For Writing and Sharing a Review
- Select the Writing a review and Sharing a review checkboxes.
- Enter the discount you want to offer in the Writing a review only and Writing & sharing a review fields.
Yotpo adds text to the templates of the Automatic Reviews Request and/or the Manual Reviews Request emails. This text informs customers that they can earn a coupon for writing and/or sharing their reviews.
Step 3: Apply coupon offer to review request
You can apply the coupon offer to Automatic Review Requests or Manual Review Requests.
Select the checkbox next to the email type:
- Automatic Review Request
- Manual Review Request
When you create a coupon and save the changes, the Automatic Review Request or Manual Review Request is automatically updated to include the coupon.
Please note:
If you disable or change the coupons, you’ll need to update the email templates manually.
Step 4: Configure coupons
Configure static coupons
To configure static coupons (the same code is used for all coupons) select the Static coupon code option:
After setting up the discount code in Yotpo, make sure you add those discount codes to your e-commerce platform, otherwise, the codes will not be accepted by your store.
Configure dynamic coupons
Uploading dynamic coupon codes
You can upload coupon codes for sharing a review, writing a review, or writing and sharing a review according to your settings.
Coupon file requirements:
- File format: CSV (comma-separated values)
- One column (the first) containing the codes
- Up to 10,000 rows
- To upload a coupon file:
- Click Upload coupons.
- Browse to the file that you want to upload.
- Click Open.
- The total number of coupon codes is updated.
- The file name is shown.
Sending a dynamic coupon usage report
You can see a report on which dynamic coupons have been used for tracking. The report is sent as a CSV file to the email address that you configure.
To send a report:
- Click Send Report
- [Optional] Type the address you want to send the email to in the field that opens
- Click Send Report
Configuring dynamic coupon code email reminders
You can configure automatic reminders to add more dynamic codes when a certain number of coupons is left.To configure the email:
- Select the Send me an email reminder to refill... checkbox.
- Enter the trigger value in the coupons left field.
Important!
If you have configured two dynamic coupons for different actions, you will not receive an individual reminder per each coupon. The coupon code email reminder will only be sent out when both coupon codes run low
Step 5: Configure the expiration date of coupons
This is the expiration date that will be shown to the customers when they receive the coupon via email.
Please note:
The format of the expiration date on the coupons is set according to the date format of the Review Widget
While the actual coupon expiration date is set in the 3rd party coupon system where the coupon codes were generated, the Yotpo coupon email can be set up to both reflect that date and stop sending out coupon email after they've reached their expiration date.
You can set your coupon expiration date in one of the following ways:
- Choose the Coupons expire on to set a specific date
- Choose the Coupons expire X days after they are received to set the expiration date for x number of days after they have been sent out to the customer
- Choose None if you do not wish for your coupons to have an expiration date
Important!
Coupon emails will not go out if the date on "Coupons expire on:" is a past date
Step 6: Customize coupon email content
The coupon email is the email your customers receive with the coupon code they earned.
- Use the Preview section to see the changes
- Send a test email to see the actual email a customer will receive
To customize the content:
- Click the arrow next to Coupon Email and Reminder Settings.
- Enter the text in the appropriate field:
- Writing a review: Email body for writing a review
- Sharing a review: Email body for sharing a review
- Writing and sharing review: Email body for writing & sharing a review
Step 7: Configure reminder email content
The Reminder Email reminds your customers that their coupon is about to expire. To configure the email content:
- Click the arrow next to Coupon Email and Reminder Settings.
- Enter the subject in the Subject: field.
- Enter the body in the Body: field.
Enabling Promoted Products in coupon emails
To enable promoted products, select the Enable promoted products in the Coupon emails checkbox.
Configuring coupon email reminder settings
This sends out a reminder either x days after the coupon was sent or x days before the coupon expires reminding the customer to renew their coupon. This added feature increases the conversion rate of your coupons and is an effective way of bringing customers back to your store to make purchases. - Select days after receiving the coupon.
- Enter the number of days in the field next to the radio button.
Configuring For x Days Before Expiration Date
- Select days before the expiration date.
- Enter the number of days in the field next to the radio button.
Coupon Reminder Variables
You can use the following variables in the Coupon Reminders. They are replaced with the appropriate values when the reminder is sent:

Configuring to not Send Reminders
- Select None
Step 8: Save changes
You must save changes to implement your coupon configuration, including enabling and disabling coupons.
To save the changes, click Save Changes.
Setting up coupons in your store admin
Please note:
The coupons feature will only work if you already have a coupon system set up in your store. We do not support sites that don't have coupon features already set up.
You must configure Yotpo coupons with the coupons system in your store in order for Yotpo coupons to be effective. How to do this varies by platform - please check your platform for specifics. All you need to do on the Yotpo side is make sure the code you receive from us is acceptable by your store.
