Customizing Your Shopify Checkout Opt-In Box

SMS marketing is consent-based. This means that for legal and privacy reasons you need to make sure you send text messages only to customers who have explicitly agreed to receive marketing messages from your online store.
The goal of this article is to enable you to customize your checkout opt-in box for SMS marketing, ensuring compliance and maximizing subscriber engagement. You should expect to seamlessly integrate an opt-in checkbox into your checkout process, allowing customers to subscribe to SMS updates and offers.
Checkout Opt-in Box Overview
Before you start sending out SMS campaigns, you need to put together a list of subscribers - people who have agreed to receive promotional text messages from you. Checkout subscription is one of the easiest and most natural ways to grow your audience.
Shopify customers can subscribe to your SMS marketing program through a checkbox in your store's checkout section. Once they provide their phone number, agree to receive your offers via the dedicated sign-up checkbox, and complete the purchase process - they become your SMS subscribers.
Customizing Your Checkout Opt-in Box
Accessing Your Checkout Opt-In Box
To begin customizing your Shopify checkbox, navigate to the Settings menu of your Shopify store and select Checkout.
Setting Your Marketing Options
On the checkout page, navigate to the Marketing options section.
Mark the box next the SMS option.
Click Save.
Important
To collect SMS consent, Shopify requires you to set up your Terms of Service and Privacy Policy in their Policies section.
Setting your Legal Policies
Navigate to the Policies section in your Shopify settings.
Select Privacy Policy. A popup will appear where you choose to either load your own policy or use an automated policy generated by Shopify.
Click Save.
Next select the Terms of Service. Another popup will appear where you can choose to load your own text or use the Shopify template.

Customizing Your Checkbox
For New Customers
Navigate to the Marketing options section of your Shopify Checkout settings.
Click the Customize sign-up labels button.
Click on the Accounts (New) tab.
In the filters bar, type “SMS”, then scroll to Checkout marketing sms disclaimer. Here you can customize the labels or use the default text.
After customizing, scroll to the top of the page and click Save.
Note
Customers can now choose a different phone number - other than the one provided for shipping purposes.
Keep in mind that for the SMS marketing subscription preference to be saved, the customer needs to complete the checkout and finish their order. If the customer doesn’t complete the checkout process, they won’t be signed to your text marketing services, and no SMS automations or flows will be triggered.
For Existing Customers
Navigate to the Marketing options section of your Shopify Checkout settings.
Click the Customize sign-up labels button.
Click on the Accounts (classic) tab.
In the filters bar, type SMS, then scroll to Checkout marketing sms disclaimer. Here you can customize the labels or use the default text.
After customizing, scroll to the top of the page and click Save.

Additional Information
To be fully compliant, Shopify will require you to set up your Terms of Service and Privacy Policy in the legal settings of your store. Go to your Shopify Admin → Settings → Policies and insert the full compliance text in the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy sections.
