How you collect customer birthdays depends on which [Shopify customer account experience](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/customers/customer-accounts/upgrade/compare-features) your store uses: - **Legacy accounts**: Customers can enter their birthday on your account registration page. - **New Customer accounts**: Since Shopify does not support a registration form for customer profiles using this account type, you'll need to collect birthdays using a custom solution or add them directly in your Shopify admin. This article explains the available options for both account types. ## Collecting Birthday Dates for Legacy Shopify Accounts Adding a birthday field to your Shopify registration form lets you collect customers' birthdays as soon as they create an account. Unlike relying on the Birthday Reward in your Rewards Page, this approach captures the information immediately, so customers don't need to discover and complete the earning rule later. ### Add a Birthday Field to the Registration Form 1. In your Shopify admin, go to **Online Store > Themes**. 2. Click **Actions > Edit code**. 3. Locate the `Customers/register.liquid` template. > [!WARNING] > Note > > File names may vary depending on your theme. Yotpo automatically syncs this information to the customer's loyalty profile. Manually add the birthday in Shopify 2. In your Shopify admin, go to **Customers**. 2. Open a customer profile. 3. In the lower right corner, locate the **Notes** section. 4. Type in the customer’s birthday, using this format: “**birthday: yyyy/mm/dd**“ 1. Example - **birthday: 1992/03/10** 5. **Save** the note. 6. Go to that customer’s profile page in Yotpo and check if the date was added successfully. You may need to refresh the page to see the updated field. When Shopify saves the customer record, it automatically notifies Yotpo. If a valid birthday is found in the customer note, Yotpo updates the customer's Birthday field in their loyalty profile. > [!WARNING] > Note > > Updating the birthday in Shopify updates the birthday stored in Yotpo. However, removing the birthday from the Shopify note does not remove the birthday already stored in Yotpo. ### Option 2: Collect Birthdays with a Custom Integration If you'd like customers to enter their birthday while [using Shopify's new Customer Accounts](https://support.yotpo.com/docs/using-yotpo-loyalty-referrals-with-shopifys-new-customer-accounts), you'll need to build your own birthday collection flow. > [!WARNING] > Note > > This approach requires development work. For example, you could: - create a Shopify app block, - add a custom form to your storefront, or - build another custom birthday collection flow. Once you've collected the birthday, your implementation should send it to Yotpo using the [Loyalty API](https://loyaltyapi.yotpo.com/reference/set-customer-birthday). After the birthday is stored in Yotpo, it becomes available for Birthday Rewards and can also sync to supported email and SMS providers for birthday marketing campaigns.
