        Optimize your subscription product offerings and maximize revenue and retention by tailoring your subscription plans to specific product variants.

        In this article, you’ll learn how to assign specific product variants to specific subscription plans so you can offer different subscription discounts and frequencies based on specific product qualities such as size, color, style, etc.

        How does it work

        By default, when you launch a subscription plan or add products to any of your plans, all product variants will be offered on your store with the same frequencies and discounts you’ve defined for that plan. Learn more about subscription plan settings.

        By assigning only specific product variants to a given subscription plan, you can tailor their frequencies and pricing to optimize your business strategy. For example, offering larger discounts on larger sizes can boost sales, and/or offering them at lower frequencies can ensure greater retention rates. In addition, removing product variants from subscription plans altogether can help you differentiate one-time or limited-time offers from subscription offers, manage low-stock items, and so on.

        Before you start

        To offer different subscription plans on different product variants, you need to have at least one subscription plan with at least one subscription product that has variants. Learn more about how to create subscription plans, and how to add product variants to your Shopify products.

        If you haven’t launched any subscription plans yet, you need to complete the Yotpo Subscriptions initial setup.

        Adding product variants to a subscription plan

        To add product variants to subscription plans:

        1. Log in to your Shopify account, and in the main menu go to Products.

        2. Click the product with the variants you want to add to your subscription plan.

        3. Under the Variants section, click Edit next to the variant you want to add.

        4. Under Purchase options click Add purchase option, and then click Select existing option to add the variant to an existing subscription plan in Yotpo Subscriptions.

        5. A popup will open with a list of all your existing subscription plans. Select one or more plans you want your variant to be assigned to, and click Add to plan.

        You’ll now see the assigned plans under the Purchase options section, which means your variant is now offered on your store with those plan’s settings. See how to preview the variants’ updated settings on your store.

        Removing product variants from a subscription plan

        Tip:
        If you know you only want to include only specific variants in a subscription plan, the easiest way is to add the product variants you want through Shopify, and not to add the product to the plan directly through Yotpo Subscriptions.

        There are two different scenarios for removing product variants from a subscription plan.

        Follow the steps for the scenario relevant to you:

        Scenario 1: If you haven’t already removed any variants from a given subscription plan, and wish to remove variants for the first time, follow the steps below for scenario 1.

        Scenario 2: If you’ve already removed specific variants from a given subscription plan, and wish to remove additional variants, follow the steps below for scenario 2.

        Removing product variants for scenario 1

        Please note: 
        In this scenario, the entire product is assigned to a subscription plan by default, and it's not possible to remove individual variants from that plan. Instead, you need to first remove the entire product from the plan, and then add back the individual variants you do want to sell in your plan. To do this, follow the steps below. 

        To remove product variants from a subscription plan before you’ve removed any variants from that plan:

        1. Log in to your Shopify account, and in the main menu go to Products.

        2. Click the product with the variants you want to remove from your subscription plan.

        3. Under Purchase options click Remove next to the subscription plan you want to remove the product from.
        Please note: It’s necessary to first remove the product from the plan entirely in order to select it again only for the variants you want to include in your plan.

        4. Under the Variants section, click Edit next to the variant you want to include in your plan.

        5. Under Purchase options click Add purchase option, and then click Select existing option to add the variant to an existing subscription plan in Yotpo Subscriptions.

        6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each variant you want to add to your plan.

        For each variant you’ve added, you’ll now see the assigned plans under the Purchase options section, which means your variant is now offered on your store with that plan’s settings. See how to confirm and preview the variant’s updated settings on your store.

        Removing product variants for scenario 2

        To remove product variants from a subscription plan once you’ve already removed other product variants:

        1. Log in to your Shopify account, and in the main menu go to Products.

        2. Click the product with the variants you want to add to your subscription plan.

        3. Under the Variants section, click Edit next to the variant you want to remove.

        4. Under Purchase options click Remove next to the subscription plan you want to remove it from, if the variant is assigned to more than one plan.

        Your Purchase options section will now have no subscription plans under it, unless you have other plans your variant is assigned to. This means your variant is no longer offered on your store with the settings of the plan you’ve removed it from. See how to preview the variants’ updated settings on your store.

        Previewing product variants on your store

        To confirm and preview your variant’s new subscription offer on your store:

        1. From your Products page in Shopify, go to the product with the variants you want to preview.

        2. Hover over the product, and click the eye icon to preview it in the product page.

        3. In your product page, click on the different variants to see the purchasing options that will be available to your shoppers for each variant.

        Your shoppers can now see the different pricing or frequencies they can choose from for different variants. If you’ve removed variants from any subscription plan altogether, they’ll see that only the one-time purchase is available for that variant.
