        Sign up for SMS is a social-based earning rule (previously known as a campaign) that allows you to reward customers who sign up to receive marketing text messages via Yotpo SMS & Email.

        Supercharge your SMS channel by incentivizing customers to sign up to SMS for loyalty perks, ensuring you are able to maximize customer lifetime value (CLTV) and increase loyalty program adoption through SMS.

        In this article, you’ll learn how to create and customize a Sign up for SMS earning rule.

        How it works

        You can set up different subscription collection methods.

        Below are all the different methods of collecting SMS subscribers:

        The subscription action across all the different methods will be registered and sent to Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals. If the earning rule is set up, the system will reward the relevant customer for completing it.

        Please note:
        Customers cannot be rewarded retroactively. This means that customers who signed up for SMS before the earning rule was created will not receive points once it's set up.


        Additionally, customers who created a store account or opted into your loyalty program after already subscribing to Yotpo SMS, will not receive a reward. They will be able to complete the earning rule and receive a reward if they sign up for SMS with a different number.

        Once the earning rule is set up, shoppers will be able to complete it in one of the following ways:

        1. Click on the earning rule tile in the module and complete the subscription flow - when customers click the earning rule on your store, a new tab with the signup page will open where they can subscribe to the service. This page is automatically created in Shopify once the earning rule is live.

        2. Subscribing to receive marketing SMS messages at any point and via any subscription method - at checkout, when creating an account, etc.

        If a customer uses any other method to subscribe, the earning rule will appear as “Completed” in the Earning Points module.

        Before you start

        To use this earning rule, you’ll need an active Yotpo SMS & Email account. If you don’t have an account, you can add it from the Shopify app store.

        Creating a Sign up for SMS earning rule

        To create the earning rule, follow these steps:

        1. From your Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals main menu, go to Set Up Program > Rewards Program.
        2. Click Create earning rule.
        3. Select Sign Up for SMS, then click Next.

        Now you can go ahead and configure the earning rule settings.

        Earning rule settings

        • Signup Page- This is the page where your customers will be redirected to sign up when clicking on the earning rule. You can choose one of the following options:
          • Default Signup Page - This option will allow Yotpo to automatically generate a signup page where your customers can complete the earning rule.
          • Custom Signup Page - Fill in your own custom URL where customers will be directed once they click the earning rule button.

        Please note:
        You can manage the way your earning rule is displayed to customers from the Rewards Page Builder and Earning Points module.


        Advanced settings

        Available for:
        Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals Platinum and Enterprise plans.


        Target audience - Add Lists & Segments to target this earning rule at specific audiences. For example, target those who have not made a purchase in over 90 days.

        Within this setting, you can choose to:

        • Apply this rule to - Use the dropdown menu to include the relevant lists and/or segments of customers you’d like to target.
        • Do not apply this rule to - You also have the option to exclude lists and/or segments. For example, if you want to apply an earning rule to all customers except for those who consistently spend a lot of money in your store. In this case, you would select: Apply this rule to - All customers, and Do not apply this rule to - Top spenders.

        Changing the name of your earning rule

        You can change the name of this earning rule by clicking the edit icon next to it on the earning rules’ settings page.

        Please note:
        The way you choose to name your earning rule here is only for internal management purposes. Your customers will not see this. You can manage the way your earning rule is displayed to customers from the Rewards Page Builder and Earning Points module.


        Finding your rule ID

        Use the Copy rule ID option if you need to share it with 3rd party partners that Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals doesn't directly integrate with.

        To find the earning rule ID, click the ellipses icon next to the Save button.

        Managing the rule status

        The rule status can be seen next to the rule name. It tells you whether the rule is active on your site or not. If active, the rule is running and customers are earning rewards.

        You can deactivate the rule if you want to. If you choose to deactivate the earning rule, it will no longer be visible to customers, and they won't be able to earn rewards from it.
