Creating Segments with the Segment Builder

Goals and Outcomes
The Yotpo SMS & Email Segments help you specifically target certain customers when sending SMS and email messages.
In this article you will get started using the segment builder.
Segment Builder Overview
Unlike lists, segments are dynamic and automatically update with new subscribers whenever your segmentation rules are met. With the segment builder’s groups and conditions, your segmentation possibilities are endless — you will find further information about this later on in the article. All you need is a proper marketing strategy!
Getting Started
In your Yotpo SMS & Email main menu, go to Audience > Lists & Segments.
Click Create audience.
In the popup, select Build manually and click Create audience.
Using the Segment Builder
To use the segment builder you have two layers of customization:
Groups: group the conditions together based on AND and OR connections.
Conditions: specify the rules a customer must meet in order to be in the segment.
Building Groups
When building groups, you want to consider how many conditions you want to have and if you want more than one to be required. Groups allow you to group conditions together to better identify your subscribers. For example you can build a group that is based on customer actions like used discount or subscribed from specific source.
Defining the Logic Between Groups
By using connectors between groups you can establish the requirements for your subscribers:
AND: A customer must meet the requirements for each group.
OR: A customer must meet at least one requirement from all of the groups.
Important
Only one connector can be selected between groups, you must choose either the AND connector or the OR connector.
Building Conditions
When selecting your conditions you can choose from the following basic categories:
Customer actions: rules based on customer activities like purchases, subscription sources, and abandoned carts
Customer details: rules based on customer details like custom profile properties, gender, and proximity to location
RFM: rulsed based on customer recency, frequency, and monetary behaviors
SMS: rules based on customer SMS activity like SMS consent status and clicked link in SMS
Email: rules based on customer email activity like email consent status and opened email
Predictive Data: rules based on our system’s predictions for customer behavior
If you have Yotpo’s Loyalty & Referrals and Reviews products, you will see the following categories in addition to the ones above:
Yotpo Loyalty: rules based on customer’s Loyalty activity like loyalty program member and current VIP tier
Yotpo Reviews: rules based on customer’s Reviews activity like submitted a review, and average star rating
Once you have picked a category and a condition, you need to specify details for the segment builder to review your subscribers with. For example if you choose Subscribed from specific source, you will need to select the source from the list and the period of time you want to review.
Defining the Logic Between Conditions
By using connectors between groups you can establish the requirements for your subscribers:
AND: A customer must meet the requirements for each condition.
OR: A customer must meet at least one requirement from all of the conditions.
Important
Only one connector can be selected between conditions, you must choose either the AND connector or the OR connector.
Segment Overview
Next to your groups and conditions you will see the Segment overview which reflects the total segment size as well as the number of SMS and email subscribers:
SMS: Total number of customers subscribed to SMS Marketing
Email: Total number of customers subscribed to email Marketing
Important
The SMS and email totals exclude customers with suppressed phone numbers and emails. Learn more here.
Note
If a customer has subscribed to both SMS and email marketing, they will reflect in the Segment overview even if the segment has conditions to only pull SMS subscribers.
Once you have customized all of your groups and conditions, click the Save segment button to generate the segment.
