    Goals and Outcomes

Adding discounts to your email campaigns can drive sales and increase customer engagement. In Yotpo Email, discounts can be seamlessly integrated into campaigns, allowing you to target specific customer segments with tailored offers. You can create discount codes for individual products or collections, apply dynamic expiration dates, or set minimum order values, ensuring that your discounts are both effective and flexible.

In this article you will be guided through creating and managing campaign discounts.

    Email Discounts Overview

With our discounts feature you can choose whether all customers get the same code or different codes and define the discount terms (percentage, free shipping, or fixed amount.). The Discount personalization tag can be added to your email content, which will be replaced with a discount code, value, or URL once the campaign is sent

    Email Discounts Process

Navigating to the Email Campaign Editor

    1. In your Yotpo Email home page, go to Campaigns > My Campaigns.

    2. Click an existing campaign to edit it, or create a new one by clicking Create campaign and selecting Email for the campaign type.

    3. In the Discount section, click the % Add a discount link to open the discount popup.

    Configuring a Discount

There are two discount methods available:

    Unique Code (Recommended)

Each customer receives a unique discount code, enhancing personalization, tracking, and control over the usage of your discounts.

    1. Select a discount type:

      • Fixed amount: Gives a specific amount off the purchase, in the store’s currency

      • Percentage: Gives a percentage off the total cost of the purchase, excluding shipping

      • Free shipping: Gives free shipping to a specific country

    2. Add a Discount URL Landing Page (Optional) - add a subpage as the landing page for the discount.

    3. Click Save.

    Tip

If you apply a fixed amount discount to specific products or collections, you can choose to deduct the amount from the total order or from each eligible product/collection.

For example, if a customer orders 3 products at $20 each (totaling $60) and you offer a $5 discount, they’ll pay $55 if the Only apply discount once per order checkbox is marked. If unmarked, the customer will pay $45 (3 x $15).

    Static Code

    1. Select an existing discount code from the drop-down list.

    2. Add a Discount URL Landing Page (Optional) - add a subpage as the landing page for the discount.

    3. Click Save.

    Note

If you don’t see codes available in the dropdown, then create new static codes in Shopify or, if you already have existing codes, make sure you have selected Yotpo Email Marketing & SMS as the sales channel.

We recommend adding at least one discount personalization tag to ensure your discount setup is complete.

    Adding Advanced Discount Settings (Optional)

    Note

The advanced discount settings are only available for discounts where each customer receives a different code.

    1. Under Apply discount to, choose whether the discount applies to the entire order, specific products, or specific collections. If you select specific products or collections, use the drop-down menu to choose them, then click Save.

    Important

You can remove products from the selection by unselecting products, or add more products by clicking Edit selection. Selecting variants is currently not supported.

    1. Under Minimum purchase required, choose whether the total cart amount must reach a specific sum for the customer to receive the discount. If you do not enter a minimum purchase amount, customers will receive the discount regardless of how much they spend on their order.

    2. Under Discount code expiration, set the expiration time for the discount in days, or select Never if you don’t want the discount to expire. The discount duration begins from the moment the message is delivered and starts individually for each customer after they receive the discount.

    3. Under Discount code prefix, enter a custom prefix of up to 6 letters or numbers that will be applied to all codes generated by this discount setup. You can mark the Include separators checkbox to add a hyphen between the prefix and the code. For example, SALE07-ADBJK.

    Important

If you have activated the store-wide discount code prefix in the Settings page in the Yotpo Email home page, you will have the following options:

    • Use the store-wide discount code prefix

    • Use no prefix for this discount

    • Add a custom prefix (which will override the store-wide prefix, if activated)

Adding a Discount URL Landing Page (Optional)

If you add the Discount URL personalization tag to your message, you can take your customers to a specific subpage (landing page) in your Shopify store. Just enter the subpage path, such as “winter-sale-2025,” and it will automatically be added to your store's domain. A preview of the full URL will be displayed. When customers visit the page, the discount will be applied to their cart automatically. If no subpage path is added, customers will be taken to your Shopify store’s homepage.

    Note

The page you add must an existing landing page on your store. No additional UTMs are needed just the existing landing page URL.

    Adding the Discount Personalization Tag

    Important

Discounts must be set up before personalization tags become available. If you have not set up your discounts, you must do so before you can continue.

Additionally, once you have set up a discount, you must include at least one discount personalization tag or you will be unable to save, schedule, and send your campaign.

After choosing the settings for your discount, you must now add one or more Discount Personalization tags to the body of your email.

    1. Select a Text block in your email where you want to place the coupon.

    2. From the Personalization tags drop-down list, select one of the discount-type personalization codes:

      • Discount Code: When your campaign is sent, this tag is replaced with a unique or static discount code.

      • Discount Value: When your campaign is sent, this tag is replaced with a discount code embedded in a link to your store site. When a customer goes to their cart on your website, the code will be automatically applied to the eligible products.

      • Discount URL: When your campaign is sent, this tag is replaced with the value of the discount type you set up, such as a percentage off, fixed amount off, or free shipping.

    3. You can now continue editing your email content or click Save & close editor if you are done.

    Tip

Remember, you can format the tag as you would any other text. So you can mix up the fonts, colors, and size. But always keep the tag’s brackets and text intact.

Using Personalization Tags in Your Subject Line

While editing your subject line, click the personalization tag symbol to the right of the text box. You will have several options for personalization tags.

Choose Campaign discount to see the tags:

    • DiscountCode

    • DiscountValue

    • DiscountURL

Using Personalization Tags in Your Campaign Preview Text

While editing your email template use the following steps:

    1. From the personalization tags dropdown, add the Discount code to your text box.

    2. (Optional) – Add additional discount tags (Discount value, Discount URL).

    Editing/Removing a Discount

You can edit or remove a discount by clicking the edit (pencil) icon or the remove (bin) icon in the Discount summary box. The discount personalization tags will be deactivated, but you must manually remove them from the email. To remove the personalization tags, open the email message as you did to add the discount personalization tag, then click the x in the personalization tag to remove it. All discount personalization tags must be removed manually including those in the subject and preview lines.

    Important

Removing a discount setup from your email does not delete your discount rule in Shopify.

Once a discount setup has begun generating codes, meaning a customer has received a message with a discount, you will not be able to edit it.
