Goals and Outcomes
To fully comply with GDPR requirements, Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals allows you to anonymize a customer’s name and email address. This removes personally identifiable information (PII) while preserving the customer’s historical loyalty activity, such as points earned, redemptions, and events.
Important
Anonymization is not the same as deleting a customer record. When a customer is anonymized, their personal information is removed, but their historical loyalty activity remains in Yotpo for reporting and analytics purposes.
Anonymizing customers is not required for billing purposes. Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals does not charge based on customer count, so having additional customers in your account will not impact your monthly fees. For more privacy details, see our Privacy Guide.
In this article, you'll learn what happens when a customer is anonymized and how to perform this action from the Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals admin.
What Anonymization Does
When you anonymize a customer:
Their name and email address are permanently removed from Yotpo.
Their loyalty activity, history, and events remain available in your analytics.
The customer cannot be identified or contacted through Yotpo.
Anonymizing a customer is permanent and irreversible:
This action removes the stored identity and breaks the link between Yotpo and the customer's eCommerce platform account.
After anonymization, the customer will no longer be able to access any rewards-related details, including points, VIP tier, or referral information.
If the same email address interacts with your store again in the future, Yotpo will create a new, separate customer record with no connection to the anonymized history.
Deleting a store account also affects loyalty data access:
A customer's Yotpo loyalty profile is linked to their store account.
If you delete a customer's account in your eCommerce platform, they will lose access to their loyalty account and rewards-related information, even if they have not been anonymized in Yotpo.
How to Anonymize a Customer

In your Yotpo Loyalty admin, go to Customers.

FAQs
What happens if the same customer returns after being anonymized?
In most cases, customers are anonymized in Yotpo and also deleted or anonymized in the eCommerce platform. If they return later, Yotpo creates a new customer profile with no connection to the anonymized record.
If the customer is anonymized only in Yotpo and not in the eCommerce platform, behavior may vary depending on your integration and setup.
Will anonymizing a customer affect analytics or reporting?
No. Anonymization removes personal information but preserves loyalty activity data, so your analytics and reporting remain unchanged. However, if you want to exclude an anonymized customer from loyalty analytics, just open their profile, click the three dots in the upper right corner, and select Edit reporting visibility.
Can Yotpo Support anonymize a customer on my behalf?
Yes. If you need assistance, you can contact Yotpo Support through the chat widget in your admin.
