Now that you’ve set up your Loyalty Tiers program, it’s time to launch it. Here’s what that process looks like and what activation settings are available.
Activating the Loyalty Tiers Program
To activate the program:
Click the Activate program button in the upper right corner.
Select a Tier placement method to determine how customers are assigned to tiers.
(Optional) Set a tier delay.
(Optional) Choose whether to include or exclude pre-opt-in actions when calculating tier eligibility. Pre-opt-in actions are included by default.

Tier Placement Methods
Retroactive
Use this option to assign tiers based on past customer activity. The system will calculate tier eligibility using a lookback window starting from a selected start date up to the activation date.
Default lookback period: 12 months before the activation date. For example, if today is August 1, 2025, the calculation will start from August 1, 2024.
Custom range: Alternatively, you can choose a different retroactive start date using the date picker.
Example: Retroactive Placement
Let’s illustrate how retroactive tier placement works with an example:
Tier term = 12 months
Program activation date = January 1, 2025
Tier placement start date = January 1, 2024
Program configuration = Base Tier, Silver ($100 entry threshold), and Gold ($200 entry threshold)
Customer A makes a $150 purchase on May 1, 2024.
When the program is activated on January 1, 2025, and retroactive tier placement is set to 12 months back, the system reviews activity starting from January 1, 2024.
Based on their purchase, Customer A meets the threshold for the Silver tier and is placed in that tier from January 1, 2025, through December 31, 2025 (based on the 12-month tier term).

Fresh start
All customers start in the Base Tier (or with no tier if a base tier isn’t configured) and move up organically based on future purchases or engagement activity after the program is activated. Past actions are not considered.
Example: Fresh Start Placement
Here’s an example of how fresh start tier placement works:
Tier term = 12 months
Program activation date = January 1, 2025
Tier placement start date = Program activation date
Program configuration = Base Tier, Silver ($100 entry threshold), and Gold ($200 entry threshold)
Customer A makes a $150 purchase on May 1, 2024.
The program is activated on January 1, 2025, with tier placement beginning on that date.
Since the customer’s purchase occurred before the activation date, it is not counted. As a result, Customer A begins in the Base Tier on January 1, 2025, and will move up only based on future activity.

Tier Delay
You can configure a tier delay to help prevent fraud by postponing when purchases impact a customer’s tier status and tier analytics.

How it works:
Tier Delay is configured in the program settings while the program is inactive.
You can set a delay of up to 45 days.
The delay applies only to Amount Spent tier thresholds. If your program is using a Points Earned threshold, Tier Delay will not apply. To use this feature, you must change your program’s default threshold type to Amount Spent.
Purchases will affect a customer’s tier status and be reflected in tier analytics only after the configured delay period has passed.
Once saved, you’ll see the configured Tier Delay setting under the Tier Term.

Important
The delay applies only to new purchases made after the setting is saved and the program is activated. It does not apply retroactively to past purchases.
If the delay is changed or removed, all existing purchases will be applied without delay.
Pre-Opt-In Actions
While the program is inactive, you can choose whether actions customers completed before joining your loyalty program should count toward tier qualification. If enabled (default setting), eligible pre-opt-in actions will be included when calculating customer tier placement.
Important
If your program uses a Tier Delay, purchases made before a customer opted into the loyalty program will count toward tier qualification if the delay period has not yet expired. This happens because purchases are processed only after the configured delay period ends. For example:
Tier Delay = 14 days
Customer makes a purchase on January 1
Customer joins the loyalty program on January 5
The purchase is processed on January 15, after the delay period expires
Because the customer had already opted into the loyalty program before the purchase was processed, the purchase will still count toward tier eligibility.
What Happens After Activation
After you confirm the tier placement method:
All customers are assigned to tiers based on your selected placement method and program setup.
Tier expiration dates are calculated from the activation date based on the tier term.
For example, if the activation date is August 1, 2025, and the tier term is 12 months, shoppers’ tier expiration will be August 1, 2026.
Tier status and related attributes are synced to your ESP. This process can take up to 24 hours.
A customer tag is added to each profile in your eCommerce platform to indicate their current tier in the following format: yotpo-tiers-{tier_name}. Depending on the number of customers you have, this process can take up to 48 hours.

As long as a customer has the loyalty tier tag on their profile, they will remain in that tier. If the tag is removed, the customer will no longer be in that tier.
What happens to customer tags if you migrated from VIP Tiers to Loyalty Tiers?
If your store was migrated from the legacy VIP Tiers program, your existing tier tags will not change. Original tiers will continue using swell-vip-{tier name}, while new tiers that were added after the migration will be formatted as yotpo-tiers-{tier name}.
So, for example, if you had two tiers before you migrated and you added a third one after migration:
The original tiers will still use swell-vip-{tier name}
The new tier will use yotpo-tiers-{tier name}
This means you will have two different tag naming conventions in your system. If you want all tiers to use the new tag format, you must:
Deactivate your Loyalty Tiers program
Delete all existing tiers that use the old tag format
Recreate the affected tiers
Reactivate the program
Once recreated, all tiers will use the new tag format consistently. Keep in mind, this process will trigger a full tier recalculation.
Important
Your Yotpo Loyalty & Referrals admin (Program Settings > General Settings > Account) must be activated before you activate the Loyalty Tiers program.
Wait for the recalculation to complete before re-accessing the program settings.
Tier entry rewards are not awarded during activation.
You can track the performance of your program in the Loyalty Tiers Performance Dashboard.
