After creating your Loyalty Tiers program, you may need to update its structure, benefits, or entry criteria as your loyalty strategy evolves. In this article, you'll learn what can be edited while your program is active and when deactivating the program is required.

How to Edit an Active Loyalty Tiers Program

Editing Tiers

Once created, tiers cannot be edited while your program is active. To modify tiers, you first need to deactivate your program:

  1. In the upper left corner of the Loyalty Tiers Program page, click the Active button.

  2. Select Deactivate program from the dropdown.

  3. Confirm the action by typing “deactivate” in the popup that appears.

    Important

    When you deactivate the program:

    • All shoppers will be removed from tiers and revert to “no tier” status.

    • All tier benefits will be disabled.

    • All customer tags will be removed in Shopify.

The deactivation process may take up to 12 hours to complete. During this time, you won't be able to make changes to your Loyalty Tiers program.

If you reactivate the program, it will go through the regular activation process. This includes a full recalculation of each customer’s tier placement based on your program rules and settings. Jump to program activation.

    Tip

We recommend pausing any tier-related flows in your ESP before deactivating your program, and turning them back on after the program is reactivated and the recalculation is complete. This helps prevent customers from receiving unwanted tier messages.

  4. Edit the tier configuration to your preference.

  5. When ready, click Activate program in the upper right corner to relaunch your updated Loyalty Tiers program.

Note

While the program is deactivated, you can also update entry rewards and benefits. However, this is not required, since entry rewards and benefits can be updated at any time while the program is active.

Editing Tier Benefits and Entry Rewards

Unlike tiers, you can update program benefits and tier entry rewards while your program is active. This includes:

  • Changing benefit and entry reward values

  • Adding new benefits

  • Deleting existing benefits

To update benefits and entry rewards:

  1. Navigate to the Loyalty Tiers program setup.

  2. To change a value, click the respective field and update it.

  3. To add a new benefit, click Add benefit.

  4. To delete a benefit, click the three-dot menu and select Delete benefit.

To complete the process, you’ll be asked to confirm you understand that you’re making changes to a live program by checking a confirmation box.

Important

  • Changes you make will apply immediately.

  • Benefits and entry rewards are not retroactive. For example, if you add a 50-point entry reward while the program is active, only customers who qualify for that tier after the change will receive the reward.

  • Entry rewards can be granted once per tier every 12 months. Changes to a tier's entry criteria, benefits, or entry rewards do not reset this 12-month cooldown. If a customer has already received an entry reward for a tier within the last 12 months, they won't receive it again until the cooldown period has ended.

  • If a tier is deleted and a new identical one is created, qualifying customers will receive the entry reward again.

  • Entry rewards can include:

    • Points only

    • Discounts only

    • Both points and discounts

Changing a Program from One Default Threshold Type to Another

If you want to switch your loyalty tiers program from one default threshold type to another (e.g., from points-based to amount-based, or vice versa), you need to recreate your tiers using the new threshold type. Since a program can only use one default threshold at a time, you must first delete any tiers using the previous threshold.

Follow these steps:

  1. Deactivate the loyalty tiers program: This ensures shoppers are removed from their current tiers and prevents new activity from affecting tier placement during the change.

  2. Delete all tiers that use the old threshold type: Each tier containing the old threshold type must be removed before you can select a new default threshold.

  3. Create new tiers with the threshold type you want: Choose either Amount Spent or Points Earned as your new default threshold and rebuild your tier structure.

  4. Configure the new tiers: Add rewards, benefits, and adjust settings.

  5. Reactivate the program: When the program goes live again, customers will be assigned to tiers based on the new threshold type and your selected placement method.
