Goals and Outcomes
Product Grouping allows you to group similar or related products and share reviews across those products. This is especially helpful when customers may leave only a few reviews per product variant, like different colors of the same shoe style. By grouping products, you can, for example, display reviews for all colors of that shoe.
Benefits of Product Grouping
Consolidate reviews across product variants
Boost social proof on new product launches
Improve conversion with richer review content
Tip
Launching a new shoe color? Add it to an existing group and its product page will show reviews from other colors in the same style.
In this article, you’ll learn how to group products in Yotpo Reviews.
Product Grouping Overview
How It Works
When products are grouped, customers will see shared reviews and average star ratings across all products in the group in key areas of your store, including:
Important
Yotpo cannot guarantee that grouped product reviews will appear in Google Shopping results, as Google uses proprietary algorithms to determine eligibility.
Here is what a grouped product review will look on-site:

The following general attributes are shown for grouped reviews:
Average rating - The overall score across grouped products
Custom question results - Responses to questions such as quality or size (available on selected Yotpo plans only)
Total reviews - The total number of reviews across the group

Grouping Requirements and Limitations
To ensure optimal performance and compliance:
The “Product Group“ column in the product catalog:
Can contain max 100 characters.
Supports only lowercase alphanumeric characters (a–z, 0–9, “_”, “-”).
Can’t contain spaces.
Each product can belong to one group only.
Each group can have up to 1,000 products assigned to it.
Reviews of grouped products may take up to 24 hours to appear on-site following a successful product catalog update.
If an order contains multiple products from the same group, only one product from the group will be included in the review request email.
How to Group Products
You can create new product groups and group or ungroup products through your Product Catalog.
For Shopify users
To learn more about how to easily group products via Shopify tags, see Keeping Your Shopify and Yotpo Product Catalogs Updated.
For Adobe Commerce users using the Yotpo 4.X.X extension
To avoid any conflicts in your product catalog, we recommend you create your product groups in the Adobe Commerce Admin. Learn more about managing your product catalog.
To group products, do the following:
Create a group name, e.g. mountain_shoes
Add the group name for the products you want to group in the Product Group column in your Product Catalog. To learn more, see Importing Product Catalogs and Updating The Product Catalog.
Important
We recommend that you only group related products. Grouping unrelated products may detrimentally impact your SEO and some advanced Google features.
Where Grouped Reviews Appear in the Reviews Widget
When Product Grouping is enabled, reviews are sorted based on your widget’s selected sorting criteria (for example, With media, Badge, or Score).
Each review is evaluated against these criteria in sequence. Reviews that match higher-priority criteria are shown first.
Native product reviews are not always shown before grouped reviews. They are prioritized only when all other sorting criteria are equal.
How Review Sorting Works
You can select one primary sorting option in the Reviews Widget (for example, Most recent, With media, Verified purchase, or Highest rating).
The selected option determines the primary order of reviews. Additional criteria are then used to break ties when multiple reviews share the same attributes.

With media
Reviews that include media (photos or videos) appear first.
If multiple reviews have media, they are further sorted by additional criteria such as verified purchase, rating, and date.
Example
Grouped review: has media, verified buyer, 5 stars
Native review: no media, verified buyer, 5 stars
The grouped review appears first because reviews with media are prioritized.
Verified purchase
Reviews from verified buyers appear first.
If multiple reviews are from verified buyers, they are further sorted by additional criteria such as media, rating, and date.
Example
Grouped review: verified buyer, 5 stars
Native review: not verified, 5 stars
The grouped review appears first because verified purchase is prioritized.
Highest rating
Reviews with higher star ratings appear first.
If multiple reviews have the same rating, they are further sorted by additional criteria such as media, verified purchase, and date.
Example
Grouped review: 5 stars
Native review: 4 stars
The grouped review appears first because higher ratings are prioritized.
What happens when the review criteria are equal?
If multiple reviews match all selected sorting criteria, they are ordered by date.
More recent reviews appear before older ones.
Note
Native vs. grouped status acts as a tiebreaker - it only determines order when two reviews are otherwise identical across all sort criteria.
Reviews of grouped products may take up to 24 hours to appear on-site after a successful product catalog update.
Reviews for Products on Your Blocklist
Reviews for products on your blocklist will continue to show in grouped products, but only reviews collected before the product was added to the blocklist.
The link for the product on the blocklist will not be clickable.
New reviews for products on your blocklist will not appear in any grouped products.
New reviews for other products in the group will not appear on the product on your blocklist.
Syndicated Reviews
Reviews are ordered based on the selected sorting criteria. When reviews share the same attributes, the following order applies:
Native reviews
Grouped reviews
Syndicated reviews
Criterion | Order in Reviews Widget |
|---|---|
1. Badge | Verified buyer reviews (native or grouped) Syndicated reviews from verified buyers |
2. Score | Reviews with 5-star ratings (native or grouped) Syndicated reviews with 5-star ratings |

Customizing Grouped Product Reviews
By default, grouped product reviews include additional elements that help shoppers understand where the review came from and how it relates to other products in the group.
What’s Included
Product attribution - Shows the original product the review was written for.
Attribution link - Lets shoppers navigate to the original product page.
Grouped product photos - Displays images from products in the group within the Photos Carousel.
Don’t want to display attribution or grouped product photos?
Contact Yotpo Support and we’ll be happy to assist.
Note
Make sure to update to the latest version of the Yotpo widget for the attribution to show.
Best Practices
Group out-of-stock products, including products on your blocklist, to leverage those products' reviews.
For product launches, group new items with existing ones for instant review credibility.
For samples, group with full-size products if automatic review request emails are enabled.
